    Heilsa,

    As an believer in Asatru, I resemble most of these remarks. :)

    My garments once in a field I gave
    To a pair of carven poles;
    Heroes they seemed when clothes they had,
    But the naked man is nothing.

    For starters, as people of faith we should not be denigrating on any other religious faith. Your experience of folks dumping on eclectics is unfortunate. No one has either the right nor ability to say what is best for other individuals.

    That said, you may feel I am dumping on eclectics by my next comments. IMHO, the philosophy of "everything is okay and right" (which tends to be an eclectic one) is an intellectually lazy thought process. When you know what is good for you, why look in a book when you can just make it up?

    When one picks and chooses your religious bits, like at a buffet, IMHO, you lose the flavor of depth and place. In what I practice, I worship the Norse Gods. That religious practice is focused on a time and place. As a result, there are specific ethics, terms and philosophy (as a small not limited sampling) that need to be taken into context in order to make sense of the whole.

    If one doesn't focus, you will not be struck down. However, IMHO, you may lose that sense of depth and place. And most certainly, you should not call yourself Asatru.

    On politics;
    My largest concern about the Republicans these days, is not because they are conservative. On the contrary, I like being a rugged individualist. My problem is the religious right. They have an agenda and it has little to do with Paganism. Sure there was a liberal Christian agenda, but way back with Carter. IMHO, since Reagan there has not been any presidential candidate that has not put their mainstream religion out as an issue of their candidacy. As a lover of the constitution, I am frightened when religion and politics meet, let alone spawn candidates.

    I don't blame Reagan for this, I do blame the Republican party for picking up that banner for some short term victories. This has damaged the whole political conversation.

    I have friends that voted for Bush because of security concerns over the religious issues. Now look where that led us...

    I absolutely, ab-so-lutely loved this episode. You are RIGHT ON. Each of us are representatives of our community when our membership to that community is known to who we are interacting with, whether or not we want to be, whether or not it is our intention. And it is absolutely vital that we are each aware of this and keep it in mind. This is the number one thing that each of us can do in order to help our community in the general public's view, in so many ways... This is the best episode of any podcast I've ever heard. More of this needs to be addressed. Hope you come back and do more podcasting, I see you haven't made an episode since last year. Come back and bring sensibility to the community!
